Focus on Revelation

Welcome to this edition of the EMEA region newsletter.  This issue features news items about two OpenInsight releases and a tongue in cheek piece with regards to the Relational database world finally embracing MultiValue ideals.

One of the biggest news stories is the proposed EMEA region conference that has been discussed internally over the last couple of weeks.  This would be one of the key events in the Revelation EMEA calendar for 2007 and we are giving you the option to pre-register for the event and help choose the technical presentations that will provide you with the most value and biggest business benefit.

OpenInsight 8.0 and ARev32

As many of you on OI WORKS will know, we are now well into the OpenInsight version 8.0 beta phase and we would like to thank everyone who is participating for your time and invaluable feedback.  The development team are working feverishly on addressing your reported issues and new beta releases are being posted at a rapid rate.

An invitation to see ARev32 in action.

One of the key features of OpenInsight 8.0 is ARev32.  This is a feature that many of you still running and relying on ARev systems have been anticipating for some time.  We are pleased to now offer you the opportunity to see ARev32 in action through a Webex meeting with Martyn.  During this online meeting, you will see ARev32 running the ARev SYSPROG account and then you'll walk through the process of converting the existing ARev SAMPLE application to ARev32 and then see it running under OpenInsight in ARev32.

Please contact Martyn to schedule a mutually convenient time to review ARev32.

Revelation EMEA Conference

Usually, the Revelation World Conference is the one and only place to meet up with fellow developers and users and experience technical presentations from some of the leading lights in the Revelation world.  However, this year we are planning a mini-conference here in London at a date to be decided in May.

It is our plan to feature a few of the most technical presentations from the World Conference, namely those from the guys at Sprezzatura.  We are also considering some additional presentations on other topical subjects and, following popular demand at previous events in London, we are also considering an evening event to round off what we hope will be a busy and incredibly informative day.

We would be very grateful if you could pre-register your interest in this event by completing our pre-registration and options form.  This form will provide you with a number of subjects that we are considering for the event.  Unfortunately, there will not be time in the day to feature all of the sessions and for this reason we are interested in which you would find most beneficial as these are likely to define the final conference itinerary.

We look forward to seeing you in London for this key Revelation EMEA event for 2007.

OpenInsight 7.3 released

The 12th March 2007 saw the official release of OpenInsight version 7.3 and which features a small number of fixes.  This upgrade can only be applied to a fully patched version of 7.2.2, all of which are available in the WORKS downloads area on www.revelation.com.

The fixes contained within this release are:

Form Designer
An error in the Form Designer when opening forms with multiple tabs has been corrected.

U2 Connector
A number of the U2 connector programs have been updated to increase both speed and usability.

Reporting
An error involving line suppression of breaks in reports generated through RUN_REPORT has been corrected.

Please contact Martyn if you are no longer a WORKS subscriber and wish to consider re-subscribing to obtain access to this upgrade and also the forthcoming version 8.0 release.

End of Year CD's for OI WORKS Subscribers

It is that time of year when we begin to put together the WORK end of year CDs, slightly later this year owing to the imminent release of version 8.0 which will be included on the CD.  This CD is made available to all WORKS subscribers with current subscriptions at the time of release.

As usual this CD will feature utilities from the OpenInsight developer community and we would welcome applications from any OpenInsight developer who wishes to include their utility on the CD.  Please contact Martyn to discuss this opportunity.

MultiValues in Relational Database Tools??

The Relational Database world was founded on Dr Codd's famous rules and vendors of such technology have used these rules to justify the need to normalise database systems to various levels of normal form and also to justify why their technology is superior to anything in use.  However, finally (and rather amusingly)  the Relational world is starting to adopt the MultiValue way of life. It is not even just one supplier who is changing their view on MultiValues. Major database suppliers with significant influence such as Oracle and Microsoft are now beginning to introduce our secret into their technologies.

Could it finally be that the mainstream application development world are acknowledging that Dick Pick had it right all along?  In addition, because OpenInsight is founded on Pick's technology, could it also be acknowledged that the original developers of Advanced Revelation and OpenInsight also got it right? I like to think so.

For the last ten years I have personally argued for the benefits of MultiValue technology in the modern business environment time and time again.  This recently lead to our white paper discussing MVDBMS environments with RDBMS offerings.  Now, people like Microsoft themselves are making this task just a little easier - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access/HA012337221033.aspx.

Finally, Revelation's 2,000,000 plus users and our army of Value Added Resellers can relax in the knowledge that they did adopt the right technology all along :).

As highly experienced professionals in the area of MultiValue application development and with many man decades of real-world development using OpenInsight, Revelation are looking forward to many new and exciting MultiValue business opportunities as the technology is more widely accepted.

If you are not already using OpenInsight to create your database driven applications and would like to understand more about this technology please contact Martyn and/or download the evaluation software from our web site - www.revsoft.co.uk.
