Focus on Revelation Welcome to this latest issue of Focus on Revelation.
The highlight for June in our region remains the EMEA conference. With the additional web session and a visit by IBM, this event is proving to be very popular with only a couple of spaces now available. In addition, we have news about the next planned release of OpenInsight, the announcement of the next World conference in 2008 and a new 2-user Developer Class license option for our ARev32 and CTO users. The details of these session are outlined below.
In addition to these highly informative sessions, we will be hearing from IBM UK and the day will finish with a guided tour of the Fullers Brewery and something to eat.
Martyn will shortly be circulating a timed agenda to all of you who have already registered for this event. ,
OpenInsight 8.0, ARev32 and the Revelation Roadmap. This session will review the forthcoming OpenInsight version 8.0 and one of this release's key features - ARev32. During this session you will see the standard ARev SAMPLE application converted to run under ARev32. Mike Ruane will also talk about recent developments at Revelation and the company's roadmap going forward.
|
Windows Common Controls: I did not know that I could do that! Did you know that since OpenInsight version 7.2.1, it has been possible to incorporate Windows Common Controls in your application? During this session we will explore how you can include nice looking gas gauges (the Cylon type strobing green bars for example) and resizable grab handles on your status line. You will learn how to incorporate standard Windows controls into your application using some undocumented API style calls.
|
Drag and Drop: An Insider's View. OpenInsight version 8.0 will feature Drag and Drop in the product for the very first time. Primarily written by developers here in the UK, this session will provide you with the real down and dirty details of this exciting new feature. During this session you will find out how to incorporate drag and drop into your applications without any programming and how to exploit the new properties and events in the best possible way. In addition, you will learn how some of these features can be used outside of the context of drag and drop.
|
Linear Rehashed: Inside OpenInsight's Filing System. This session will explore the low level format of Linear Hash Files and provide you with a better understanding of the internals of the filing system that you work with everyday in OpenInsight. Attendees will learn about the internal structures of .LK and .OV files, how to distinguish between the file types, how to investigate GFEs manually and a whole lot more besides.

Internet 2.0 Times have moved on a lot since the early days of OICGI and technologies have leapt ahead. With these new technologies have come new opportunities but regretfully also new threats.
The first part of this presentation will cover the new OECGI2 and how it expands the feature set of OECGI. You'll learn how to use OECGI2 to talk to multiple servers and even to service multiple applications. The second part will concentrate on Web Security - an issue that could prove disastrous if ignored. Most people write their applications assuming that users are good and kind hearted - or at least compliant. In the world of the web this isn't always the case and hackers love nothing more than the challenge of breaking into a new system. Using FireFox as a tool you'll learn some of the cool add-ons that can help in your investigations of security holes. You'll learn simple ways of locking down OpenInsight Web Applications: Is INET_SECURITY secure? Cookies - too much can be bad for you. Sessions - they're not just for musos any more Client Attacks Code Injections - not what the Doctor ordered
Attendees should leave the presentation with a greater understanding of the tools available to them along with a new found respect for the fact that their web applications might not be as safe from hackers as they think.

Attention all Advanced Revelation Users
If you have a software application written in Advanced Revelation or RevG and you would like to migrate it away from the DOS operating system, then ARev32 is the technology that you have been waiting for.
The latest release of OpenInsight, version 8.0, includes the long awaiting ARev32 conversion tools. This wizard driven toolset now enables you to phase your move to the Windows environment. No longer are you faced with a giant leap across the gorge from DOS to Windows. Now you can take a slower, focused and more structured approach by opting to take the stepping stone route across the gorge.
Furthermore, if you are planning to web enable your legacy Advanced Revelation application, ARev32 can help to ease this process.
If you need any assistance in converting your Advanced Revelation or RevG application, or if you just wish to discuss the benefits and processes, or review an online demonstration please contact Martyn on +44 (0) 20 8912 1003 in the first instance.
