Focus on Revelation It's that time again when I find myself putting pen to paper (or keyboard to screen) to touch on some of the things going on at Revelation EMEA. This issue of the e-newsletter highlights the recent and highly successful EMEA mini-conference, the brand new Universal Driver 4.0 and other news from around the Revelation community. Universal Driver version 4.0
Revelation Software is proud to announce the release of the Universal Driver 4.0 as part of our network product suite.
The new Universal Driver 4.0 (UD 4.0) is client/server software designed to operate on Microsoft Windows Network Operating System environments exclusively. The UD 4.0 provides enhanced performance, reliability and data integrity for all OpenInsight and ARev 2.03 or later applications that are using Linear Hash files.
This brand new product includes a console application to manage records locks. It is also backward compatible with all previous version of Linear Hash. This now means that files created in the UD 4.0 can now be accessed with earlier Windows network products, such as the Windows 2000 Service 2.1, for example. This new release now also features automatic registry configuration making installations and maintenance a snap.
There are however some points to note. The Universal Driver -
is currently only supported on Windows based platforms.
does not support DEP currently found on Windows 2003 and later servers. This should be disabled if possible to run the UD 4.0 while we work on the OpenInsight changes needed to support DEP.
does not support Windows '98 or earlier workstations.
The UD 4.0 will be supplied by email or FTP download and the product is available as a full product, cross-grade (from Linux or Novell) and upgrades are available from earlier Windows 2000 Services and Revelation NLMs.
Please contact Martyn in the first instance to discuss your requirements and to obtain a quotation.

Revelation EMEA Conference
June 27th saw a number of developers from all over Europe and South Africa travel to London for the first Revelation mini conference in some years. In addition, Mike Ruane was over from the USA to talk about OpenInsight version 8.0.x, ARev32 and where Revelation Software is heading with OpenInsight for the remainder of this year and our keynote address to get proceedings underway was from IBM UK.
The days main feature was a series of technical presentations from Andrew McAuley, Carl Pates and Aaron Kaplan from Sprezzatura. The day is celebrated and fully explained in for detail by Andrew in Sprezzatura's forthcoming SENL volume 4 issue 5. Please contact Sprezzatura if you do not currently receive SENL and they will be happy to add you to their growing SENL subscriber list.
One of the most talked about presentations was entitled Internet 2.0, hosted by Andrew and Carl following lunch in the hotel's restaurant. This presentation was a whirlwind tour through the addition of OECGI2.EXE to the OpenInsight product suite, through to an overview of just some of the security issues that face OpenInsight Web developers. All those developers working with the web, or planning to in the near future, were left with much to think about and a notepad of highly important tips and information.
The success of this session has lead to Sprezzatura considering a three day training workshop during which this massive topic will be looked at in further detail. Please contact Martyn if you are interested in attending this highly topical workshop.

BAE Systems wins award with OpenInsight
In May, 2007 fellow Works member Franklin Bumpers of BAE Systems in the USA received an award for software that he developed using OpenInsight release 7.
The award reads as follows:
"For your efforts in providing outstanding support to the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Finance. In recognition of your outstanding work in the development and modification of several databases of information that has been critical in the research and analysis of capitalization efforts. The compilation of data has reduced the time needed to gather information, enabling research and analysis much quicker. Additionally, the information was presented in a user-friendly format that is easily understood by individuals in both the financial and program offices. Your capturing of this data has been key in determining a recommendation for capitalization and expense. BAE Systems formally recognizes your excellent responsiveness, dependability, and initiative. You are a credit not only to the SETA II contract but also to BAE Systems."
Congratulations Franklin!

Revelation WORLD Conference
The UK conference last month demonstrated just how much knowledge and value can be obtained through attending a Revelation Conference- and that was just in one day!
The Revelation World Conference is the premier event of it's kind on the Revelation calendar. There are significantly more technical sessions to choose from and this is the ultimate event to network, have fun and learn, learn, learn from the best developers in the business.
As usual there is a dedicated conference web site for this event and you can jump straight to it for more information by clicking here. We look forward to seeing you in Vegas.

From the technical desk
The paste functionality in ARev32 has been enhanced so that, if were in AREV32, any cr/lf sequence in the pasted string is replaced with just a cr.
Normally, when you select a line of text, a cr is appended at the end so that it can be immediately executed. If you select a block of text, each line has a cr at the end of it, and (by default) the last line also has a cr appended.
However, if you hold the shift key when you release the mouse during highlighting the selected text, this tells the screen control NOT to put the cr at the end of the last (or only) line of text.
When you then paste this text, it DOESNT have a terminating cr, and thus you can edit or modify the text before you press <return> for its execution.
