Universal Driver FAQ

Universal Driver.

More and more people are moving to pure IP Novell networks, Windows 2003 and Linux servers.  In addition, an increasing number of users need to hide their data over WAN and internet based systems. As a result, Revelation saw the need for a new generation of network products to allow for these choices.

The result was the Universal Driver which enabled Revelation users to install and run Advanced Revelation 2.03, or greater and OpenInsight based systems on Windows, Novell or Linux based networks.  The Universal Driver utilises the IP protocol for all three network operating systems, as well as Named Pipes for the Windows networks.

The Universal Driver enhances the functionality contained in earlier network products.  It protects your data from file corruption and enhances system performance, by off-loading most of the processing to the file server.  In addition, the product allows all three platforms to create .LK and .OV (Revelation data) files larger than 4 gigabytes. It has the ability to completely hide all .LK and .OV files from workstations.  This allows the prevention of the examination of .LK or .OV files from hex editors, at a client workstation. Lastly, the LH Verify process (used to confirm there is no data corruption) is integrated into the server side, making the process much faster than it ever has been.

The Windows Service side of the Universal Driver is still as powerful as the earlier network products.  However, it now allows three possible configuration options, being Named Pipes, TCP/IP, or a combination of the two.

One of the major changes in the Universal Driver is with regard to the Novell component.  No longer does it run on the seemingly outdated IPX protocol, but it runs exclusively on IP for Novell. This limits the use of the Universal Driver to Netware 5.1 SP6 and later server versions and Netware 6.0 SP3 and later. Users who wish to use IPX for Revelation based systems will need to use the Revelation NLM 5.5.  The Universal Driver will work with, or without the Novell Client, however many sites still choose to use the Novell client even with IP.

The other major change in the Universal Driver from Revelation’s previous Network Products, is the Linux component.  This enables OpenInsight users to run with their applications installed on a Linux server from their Windows 2000 workstations, as safely as if they were on a Windows or Novell Network.

Using an older Revelation Network Product ?

The Revelation Universal Driver 3.0 replaces Windows 2000 server, as well as the Revelation NLM on networks running contemporary operating systems.  This milestone network product allows you to run Advanced Revelation 3.12 and OpenInsight 16 and 32 bit on Windows, Novell and Linux servers using IP.

There are some major product improvements with this release. Upgrades are available from all of our existing network products. Please contact us for the very latest pricing information.  Some of the enhancements include:

Moving up to the Universal driver will enable you to take advantage of pure IP based systems (Novell IP in the case of Novell based systems).  This provides even better system performance and stability than that which we saw with the earlier network products.
Installation and configuration time is reduced as only one REVPARAM file is required regardless of how many directories contain .LK and .OV files.  This also reduces the risk of missing a REVPARAM file during your installation and future support costs.
The Universal driver supports files larger than 4 Giga Bytes - a must as more media files, such as images and sound, are being held within Linear Hash.
We are also now able to support larger frame sizes.
Application developers can now hide .LK and .OV files from workstation users.  This provides even greater system stability security as they are hidden from Hex editors at the workstation level.
The LH Verify process has been speeded up by incorporating it on the server side of the system.
From version 4.0 of the Universal Driver a brand new user lock management module has been included (Windows only).  This module enables you to both view current user locks on the system and then to release those locks if required through the module - a must have for anyone with higher number of users or a system spread over multiple sites.  See the installation manual for more details.

The Universal Driver only works on networks where all the workstations are NT, 2000 or XP. More accurately, you may be able to install the universal driver on networks with other Work Stations, but the 98 Work Station and below will not run AREV or OpenInsight using the Universal Driver.
