Network Product Support Matrix

Universal Driver

New multi-user deployment licenses ship with a bundled Universal Driver. This is a piece of technology that protects deployed systems from the issues of network outages and it helps to keep your system running as efficiently as possible.

In addition, the Universal Driver version 5 (UD5) supports both 32-bit and 64-bit installations, secure communications, authentication for clients, backup and failover options. Over the years, the Universal Driver has helped to greatly reduce the down time of deployed systems and the associated support overhead.

The Universal Driver enables OpenInsight based systems to robustly run on Windows 2003, 2008 and 2012 server based environments supporting Windows XP, Windows 7, 8 and 10 workstations.

The software can also be used to configure ultra-safe environments where the data is accessed from external sources. This is especially important where the data is being accessed over a Wide Area Network or the internet and where external attacks are a constant threat. Using two servers, a system can be configured with the application on one server accessible to the remote user and the data resides on another server which cannot be directly accessed externally. The only communications between the two servers are through the Universal Driver and this cannot be manipulated by hackers or other malicious resources.

The Universal Driver 5.0 and later supports:

Latest Communication Technology – The Universal Driver 5.0 and later utilises communication libraries to provide a robust, reliable service between the UD and its clients.

Secure Communication Option – If desired, the communications channel between the Universal Driver server and its clients can be SSL encrypted. This prevents unauthorised interception of sensitive information.

Authenticated Clients Option – If desired, the system can be configured to only allow explicitly authorised client software to connect to the Universal Driver over a secure SSL channel.

Connection Retry – If the communication link between the client and the server is temporarily lost and then subsequently restored, the client will attempt to reconnect and resume normal operations.

VSS Friendly – The Universal Driver is VSS ( Volume Snapshop Service ) aware. This enables OpenInsight data to be backed up with minimal disruption to normal operations.

64-Bit - The Universal Driver 5.0 may only be installed on 64-bit versions of the Windows operating system (e.g. Server 2008 or Server 2012).  Support for Linux servers is planned for the near future.

The Universal Driver 5.0 also has an interface to the OI Console that allows you to view and manage record locks without having to stop the Linear Hash Service. The OI Console interface allows multiple locked records to be selected and unlocked in one step from any workstation on the network.

Revelation Software conducts intensive benchmark testing for OpenInsight running on all major current network servers and client workstations as they become generally available.  These benchmark tests look at functionality on the new environments, data integrity and also performance.  The results of these tests are published on revelation.com.
